ITEM DESCRIPTION
Striking 1924 Swiss weekly “Schweizer Illustrierte Zeitung” featuring the celebrated Swiss tour of the Zeppelin over Zurich—photographed passing the twin towers of the Grossmünster and approaching from the lake (“Die Schweizerfahrt des Zeppelin”). Issued 18 September 1924 in the magazine’s 13th year, this large-format, image-led periodical captures interwar modernity in Switzerland in rich gravure-style halftones and densely captioned German text.
Inside are substantial aviation features and contemporary reportage: a multi-page section on “Verkehr und Technik” (transport and technology) surveying international air traffic; photographs of a Handley-Page airliner (registration Q-BAHG) and wicker-seated passenger cabin interiors; aerial views of Rotterdam (Stadhuis and Postkantoor), Dutch waterways and polders near Rotterdam, and a detailed 1924 summer map of Central European air routes. Alpine material includes the dedication of a refuge hut in the western Bernina massif, Engadine pastoral scenes, and portraits of Swiss scientists and officials. Cosmopolitan culture appears across the “Bunte Seite,” celebrity and political vignettes (composer Pietro Mascagni, Senator Robert La Follette, bass Fedor Chaliapin, among others), and a fashion spread from “Die Seite der Frau” noting the waning cloche hat trend. Advertising pages bristle with iconic interwar brands—Araby-Seife, Dr. Scholl’s Fußpflege, HAG coffee, Nestlé Kindermehl, Vorwerk, Isola Stahlglas, Palmin, Creme Mouson, Trybol, Brockhaus, Eau de Cologne 555, Habanos cigars—offering an excellent visual record for design and social-history research.
The magazine presents well for its age: paper gently toned, faint handling soil, scattered small edge nicks and short closed tears mainly along the fore-edge and spine fold, minor corner softening and waviness to a few leaves, and occasional tiny foxing specks; inner pages remain supple, cleanly printed, and fully legible. A pleasing survivor from the golden era of European illustrated news weeklies, documenting both Swiss urban life and the public fascination with rigid airships at the moment Zeppelin travel again captured headlines in 1924.
