1920s Frozen Fire Engine Boston Winter Blizzard Ice Storm Glass Negative OOAK

Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique 4x5 gelatin silver glass plate negative captured circa the 1920s, documenting one of the most grueling hazards of urban winter firefighting: a motorized fire engine completely encased in massive sheets of sculpted ice and frozen runoff, while firefighters work with a pickaxe to chop the apparatus free.

The period kraft filing sleeve is inscribed in vintage red pencil:

\"Ice covered / Fire Engine\" (with an earlier struck-through notation).

Historical Context:

Fighting major multi-alarm blazes in urban New England during deep sub-zero cold snaps and winter gales created surreal, perilous ice palaces on city streets. Thousands of gallons of pressurized water pumped from hydrants and aerial hoses instantly froze upon contact with freezing air, brick masonry, and equipment. Pumpers and hose wagons stationed near the fire lines were frequently showered in heavy freezing mist and back-spray, encasing engines in hundreds of pounds of solid rime ice and requiring crews to chip them out with picks before they could return to the firehouse.

This striking press negative captures the frozen aftermath in sculptural, tactile relief:

  • The Encased Apparatus: Massive, rounded drifts and stalactites of solid ice entirely encrust the hood, front radiator, fenders, running boards, wooden spoke wheels, and side ladders of the early motorized pumper.

  • The Streetscape: Long, hanging icicles fringe the commercial building awning and storefront windows in the background, while thick insulated active fire hose lines lie buried beneath frozen slush in the snowy street.

Specifications:
  • Format: Heavy antique silver gelatin glass plate negative, exposed directly in a press camera circa 1920s–1930s.

  • Archive Sleeve Included: Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft darkroom filing sleeve, bearing authentic period red pencil notation: \"Ice covered Fire Engine\".

Please Note: This listing is for the original antique glass plate negative and its period paper archive sleeve only. Any positive photographic images shown in this listing are modern inverted digital scans provided solely as a visual representation to show what a finished photograph prints like. No physical paper photograph, modern print, or paper product of any kind is included with this purchase.

Condition:

Very Good antique condition. Heavy glass plate is structurally sound with no cracks, fractures, or perimeter glass breaks. Emulsion across the primary fire engine, working firemen, pickaxe, and ice-covered building facade is crisp, clean, and well-preserved with rich midtone contrast. Displays typical authentic edge silvering and minor handling wear strictly along the extreme outer borders outside the image area, consistent with a working newspaper press plate. Accompanied by the original period kraft morgue filing sleeve with vintage pencil notations.

The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
