CONDITIONPresented honestly at the assigned grade. This is a well-loved century-old card showing wear consistent with SGC 2 (GOOD): rounding and softening at the corners, edge and border wear with some chipping at the extremities, and light handling marks and print speckling visible in the sky and background areas. The reverse is the blank cream stock variety and shows even age toning along with scattered specks and a small dark spot toward the lower center. Colors on the front remain surprisingly bright for the grade, and the badger illustration and the Cowan\'s Mell-O-Milk Chocolate advertising panel are fully intact and sharp in appearance. ABOUT THE CARD AND SETThe V2 Cowan Co. Animal Cards were issued in the 1920s by the Cowan Company of Toronto, one of Canada\'s best known chocolate and cocoa manufacturers of the era. The set consists of 24 cards, each featuring a color illustration of a North American animal in a wide horizontal format, with the subject named in both English and French. This example is #13, listed as Badger and Blaireau, and carries the Cowan\'s Mell-O-Milk Chocolate 5 cent and 10 cent size advertising panel at the right side of the front.
Cowan\'s issued the series in multiple advertising variations, and this card is the blank back version as noted directly on the SGC label. Canadian confectionery issues from this period were distributed regionally and in far smaller quantities than the big American tobacco and gum sets, and complete 24-card runs are difficult to assemble today.
