Up for sale is a Rare “8-Days” modelLONGINES17-jewelcalibre 19.41 Marine Chronometer with 2-tier Mahogany Box and BrassGimbal Suspension Leveling Ring. The clock and box are good working conditon, and both are in fair to good cosmetic conditon.
This is a comparatively rare model of Longines Marine Chronometer as it has an extra-long power reserve and will run continuously for 8 full days (actually around 9 days) after a full wind-up. In contrast, most other Longines chronometers can run for only around 36 hours (1.5 days) before fully unwinding and stopping.
Longines Marine Chronometers were well known for excelling and winning in world time-trial accuracy competitions, and Longines won numerous worlds fair awards for their merits. Longines was therefore one of the most performant and highly sought-after marine chronometers of the 1920s and 1930s.
Only the clock, gimbal ring, wooden box are included in this sale, as shown in the photos.
The wooden box is in good conditon, but it is 106 years old and has some minor loss of finish, dirt and some oxidation on the brass box parts. See photos.
The wooden box has a latch and key hole, but there is no key included in this sale. I will provide a printed design pattern for the box key which may assist you in finding or making a replacement key.
The clock is in excellent running condition, and is keeping time. Any prior service history is unknown.The clock runs strongly and continuously for approximately9 DAYS after a full wind-up. The power reserve indicator dial is marked for 0 to 8 days, but this mainspring is very strong and the clock actually runs for approximately 9 days after a full wind-up.
The time-setting feature has been thoroughly tested and it works as expected (by gently pulling-up on the winding stem, then rotating the stem to adjust the hour and minute hands).The clock movement has some accumulated dirt, oil, scratches and smudges. See photos and video of the clock movement.
The clock dial is in fair to good condition, with some oxidation, slightly darkened or dirty areas, small scratches or streaks, and spots of patina. There are some darkened circular drag-marks on the dial under some of the hands. See close-up photos of the dial.
There are rub-marks on the extreme outer edge of the dial where the bezel ring clamps down upon the dial. This wear is common, and is normally out of view when under the bezel. (See photos).
All 4 of the original blued-steel clock hands are are present and they are in fair condition. There is oxidation and patina on some of the hands (see close up of hands).
The clock case is in fair to good condition. There is a general level of oxidation, and some scratches, spots, and a reddish-stain on the casing. See photos.
The movement is enclosed by as special movement-viewing-window glass that acts as a dust and moisture seal. This small round movement cover glass is very clear, and has no scratches, chips, cracks nor scuffs. See photos.
The large main beveled clock glass is very clear, and I would say is very near to being flawless. I cannot see any scratches or scuffs, and I do not even see any micro-size flaws. It’s a great piece of clock cover glass.
The Brass Chronometer Case Tub has and Gimbal Ring have scratches, oxidation and significant accumulation of dirt or other residue. (see photos)
The chronometer's UP - DOWN winding power reserve indicator hand and its driving mechanism are working properly. The Longines power reserve indicator planetary gearing system is notorious for failing over time. This one works perfectly ! The power reserve indicator hand measures how much time remains before the clock runs out of power and stops. This indicator is marked for 0 to 8 days of winding power reserve, but due to the still very good capacity mainspring the indicator hand goes even farther to where 9 days would be. The clock has been confirmed to run strongly and steadily for approximately 9 (nine) days, and keeps good time.
The brass gimbal ring, its support screws and nuts are all present and are functioning as expected. There is a fair amount of oxidation and accumulation of tarnish and dirt on some of the metal surfaces. See photos.
The swiveling locking arm for the gimbal ring and clock case is present and is working properly. The locking arm and its related parts have some oxidation in certain areas. See photos.
Although the clock is currently functioning well and keeping good time, I cannot guarantee continued future operation or timing performance as all of the parts inside the clock are 106 years old.
Only the working Longines Chronometer clock, the gimbal ring, and the Mahogany mounting box are included in this sale. No other items are included.
The clock will be double-boxed with plenty of protective cushioning, with tracking and insurance for safe delivery. I've shipped over 40 of these chronometers with 100% of them arriving safely in undamaged condition.
