1918 South Africa Censored Cover Johannesburg 2.5d KGV Stamp WWI Postal History: $12.74
45 PM, represents a compelling artifact of wartime civil correspondence. The cover bears a blue two-and-a-half-pence Union of South Africa postage stamp featuring the portrait of King George V, with bilingual inscriptions "UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA" and "UNIE VAN ZUID AFRIKA" flanking the top corners and "POSTAGE / POSTZEGEL" arcing around the royal vignette. The stamp's denomination appears twice in the bottom corners, reflecting the dual-language convention of the British dominion. A circular purple censor mark, stamped "PASSED CENSOR" with the numeral 21 centered and an "S" below, attests to the mandatory inspection of mail during the Great War, a practice instituted to intercept sensitive information and monitor civilian communications across the British Empire. The reverse of the envelope carries a striking red-ink vertical inscription reading "Opened by Censor." above the Dutch/Afrikaans equivalent "Geopend door Censor.," a bilingual formula characteristic of South African officialdom where both English and Afrikaans held official status. This printed censor tape or envelope flap marking indicates the item was deliberately opened, inspected, and resealed by postal authorities. The envelope exhibits the characteristic V-shaped flap closure, prominent vertical and horizontal creases from folding and handling, significant yellowish-brown discoloration consistent with acid migration and age, frayed edges, and scattered dark spots and smudges likely from dirt, ink transfer, or environmental exposure. A small purple-blue ink smudge near the word "by" further evidences the handling process. The cover is empty, containing no letter or enclosure. Such covers document the intersection of postal history, military censorship, and bilingual administrative practice in early twentieth-century South Africa, offering material evidence of how ordinary correspondence was monitored and processed during global conflict. The item holds interest for collectors of WWI postal history, South African philately, and censorship ephemera.
