Offered for sale is an antique 1918 Connecticut automobile license plate, displaying registration number 9-190.

This historic license plate features flat metal construction with painted registration characters, a light-colored center panel, and contrasting dark side panels. The left panel displays CONN vertically, while the right panel displays 1918 vertically.

Dating to the final year of World War I, this plate is now more than 100 years old and represents an interesting surviving piece of early American automotive history.

The year 1918 was a significant period in American history. Woodrow Wilson was president, the United States was involved in World War I, and the automobile industry was continuing to transform American transportation.

Automobiles were becoming increasingly important for personal travel, commerce, and business, although vehicle ownership was still far less widespread than it would become during the following decades.

Connecticut was one of the pioneering states in automobile registration and regulation. Its early license plates featured a variety of distinctive designs that differed substantially from the standardized plates familiar today.

The 1918 Connecticut design, with its vertical state abbreviation and year markings on opposite ends of the plate, is a recognizable example of early 20th-century registration plate styling.

Unlike later embossed license plates, this example features flat metal construction and painted characters, reflecting an earlier method of license plate production.
