Offered is an original real photo postcard (RPPC) documenting a patient identified on the reverse as Henry Beard, age 20, suffering from elephantiasis. The striking image shows the patient in a hospital wheelchair with severely enlarged lower limbs suspended in traction prior to treatment.
The reverse is extensively annotated and identifies the patient as Henry Beard, age 20, stating he developed elephantiasis after bathing in the Ohio River in 1913. It further notes that both limbs were amputated at Memorial Hospital in Corry, Pennsylvania, during February 1916. This remarkable handwritten medical documentation greatly enhances the historical significance of the postcard.
