A rarely-seen c. 1913 Baseball Lovers postcard titled “A Steal,” part of the later wide-black-border continuation in the style of the 1910 Colonial Art baseball romance series. The design captures a base-running embrace at home plate — a playful fusion of sport and sentiment that made this series popular among collectors. Printed in bold monochrome with wide black framing, catalogued as PC798-11 in the Keetz Baseball Postcard Checklist.
On the Series:
These wide-border cards were issued in the early 1910s, possibly as a follow-up to the 1910 sepia Baseball Lovers set. They used similar posed studio imagery but were printed with black borders and a different caption style. Few survive today, and graded examples are rare.
Condition Summary:
Graded SGC 1.5 (Fair). Moderate surface and edge wear typical of the issue but solid integrity overall. Clean, unused reverse. Encapsulated in an SGC holder for authenticity and protection.
Population & Rarity:
As of November 2025, SGC has graded only two total postcards from the Baseball Lovers – Wide Black Border series (PC798-11). This card, A Steal, is the higher-graded of the two (SGC 1.5 FR). The wide-border subset remains among the more elusive pre-war baseball postcard issues.
