HÔTEL MEURICERue de Rivoli PARIS July 8th -- Minnie Darling The joy that yours & Belle's letter provided on our arrival here cannot be portrayed by one so poor of speech as I - it was the best thing that could have been - I did not write sooner because there are but two mails a week leaving this land owing to the strike of the French seamen which still continues - I hope it won't keep my letter from reaching you - Bob sent me a cable about her safe arrival at Sea Cliff which was a great comfort to me - I am looking at every-thing with you in the back ground - Yesterday at Versailles was such a treat. I am going there again because there was such a mass of humanity there, it being the first Sunday of the month, that I heard and saw and what is worse smelt French people -I like the odor of Amer-ican crowds better, I think - We have been very fortunate in getting hold of a chauffeur with a lovely big Limousine(which of course we use open) who goes by the name of Édouard and is guide, philosopher and friend. He knows Paris & the surrounding country as a native should - has information which he only gives if one wants it and is a perfect gentle-man and speaks a partial English. He drove us through the woods & it closed with such lovely, cool green silences as I never saw — and I feel that we will see all the sights worth while ifwe follow him. Mr. Boule who is the Paris business representative met with us — He is a polite little man, with one eye which is always on "shoe bundle things" while the other gazes malignantly on the person, but he speaks with caution. very fair English & has a good deal of information. Mr. Wright of London is here for a few days & almost caused the children to lose their gravity by severing his beard with his eye & that something. When he left the room there was some giving vent to pent up risibles. We are going towander along the streets this morning — Louise & — the boys have gone out to the business offices — This afternoon we are to drive to one of the outlying places.
