THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A MAGDALEN
by L. C. W. (pseud, for LOU WOOSTER)
with a brief preface by the longtime "Minister" [Dr. Stagg, writing anonymously here] of the First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.
Birmingham Alabama: Birmingham Publishing Company, 1911; very rare (suppressed) 1st edition; with 157 pages, bound in original art nouveau-like hardcover binding. NO ILLUSTRATIONS
Autobiography of Birmingham Alabama's much beloved reformed prostitute and Madam. She set up her "red light house" after spending time [doing the same kind of work] in Mobile Alabama and in New Orleans Louisiana. She was "much beloved" for not leaving the city during Birmingham's terrible 1870s Cholera epidemic. In fact, she and her "girls" turned their "house of ill repute" into a "hospital" wherein they nursed violently ill patients (when much of the rest of Birmingham was turning their collective backs on the sick).
She later "reformed" and set up an "informal outreach" to Birmingham's "ladies of the evening."
Perhaps most interesting is her detailed description of her friendship and "love affair" with assassin John Wilkes Booth. (See final scan).
Even though she had "reformed," her book was tightly suppressed making it nearly impossible to find an original 1911 edition these days,
See my reference book: BIRMINGHAM BOUND: ... THE FIFTY MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS ABOUT BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA, #13 for more details.
Binding moderately rubbed & soiled with coffee cup circle stain on the front board; white bindery lettering still bright & easy to read; dime sized piece torn from the blank front end-paper's lower fore-corner; book is a tad shaky but not bad at all - it's still holding together REALLY WELL; no marks of any kind within the book; Near VERY GOOD and quite fine print ... [sigh] ... but please read :-)
