For sale is an authentic, 100+ year old, SEALED and UNOPENED tin of Luyties "White Lilac" Talc from St. Louis, Missouri.
THE HISTORY:
Made by the Luyties Homeopathic Pharmacy Company, founded in St. Louis in 1853 by Dr. Herman Luyties — a German immigrant who opened the very first pharmacy in St. Louis. Luyties became one of the largest homeopathic and toilet goods manufacturers in America. Their famous fireproof factory at 4200 Laclede Ave (built 1915) is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Luyties was later bought out around 2000 and no longer exists, making their early vanity goods true relics.
THE AGE:
Circa 1910-1925. This embossed floral cardboard-over-tin construction with the delicate script paper label was used before all-metal shaker tins took over in the 1930s. This exact style appears in Luyties catalogs by 1927, so this tin pre-dates that.
THE CONDITION - NEW OLD STOCK:
This is as close to mint as you will ever find:

• Original Label — 100% intact, readable "White Lilac Talc / Luyties ST. LOUIS MO." with small leaf ornament
• Original Embossed Paper Wrap — Beautiful textured floral pattern, no tears
• Tin Top & Bottom — Some surface rust / age spots on metal rim as expected for 110 years, but solid with no holes
• No Dents, No Crush — Stands straight, lid tight
I have not cleaned it — the light patina and foxing on the paper is part of its 100-year history and what collectors want.
