Wonderful original 1910 Siasconset / Sconset, Nantucket, Massachusetts photograph album, containing approximately 65 antique photographs documenting a family’s summer on Nantucket.
The original handwritten cover label reads:
“Sconset Mass.
Summer of 1910”
The album contains an especially appealing collection of early Nantucket beach and summer-life photography, including numerous scenes of women and children at the shore, period bathing costumes, beach gatherings, striped beach shelters, family groups, children playing, cottages and informal everyday snapshots.
Several photographs are particularly striking, including wonderful candid images of children playing in the sand and surf and groups of women relaxing on the beach in characteristic early-20th-century summer clothing.
The photographs appear to form a coherent family collection rather than an assembled group, providing a charming visual record of a summer spent at Sconset more than 115 years ago.
Approximately 65 photographs in all. The album itself is only about half filled, with numerous unused pages remaining.
A particularly appealing piece of early Nantucket history with strong crossover interest for collectors of Siasconset, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts history, antique photography, early beach culture, bathing costume/fashion and social history.
The album is being offered complete and intact as found.
Condition: Antique used condition. Album covers show considerable age-related rubbing, spotting, stains, discoloration and general wear. Original handwritten paper label has toning, staining and edge loss. Interior pages and photographs show varying degrees of age toning, fading, spotting, marks and wear. Individual photographs vary in condition and contrast. Approximately 65 photographs are present and the album is roughly half filled. Please examine all photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description.
