The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Wheat Cent is one of the most iconic and recognizable key dates in all of American numismatics. With a mintage of only 484,000 pieces struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin has been a cornerstone of Lincoln cent collections since the series began. The VDB initials on the reverse belong to sculptor Victor David Brenner, the coin's designer - and their presence on this San Francisco issue makes it the rarest and most coveted of the first-year Lincoln cents. This example has been certified by NGC and designated UNC Details due to cleaning, but the underlying coin is undeniably uncirculated.
The photos show a coin with bright red-orange copper luster that fills the surfaces with real visual energy. The S mintmark below the date is sharp and clear, and Brenner's VDB initials at the bottom of the reverse are fully visible and well-defined. The devices show crisp detail throughout - from Lincoln's portrait to the wheat stalks on the reverse - consistent with a coin that never saw pocket change. The cleaning has imparted that characteristic bright, reflective look, but the eye appeal remains strong for what it is.
This coin is a rare opportunity to add a genuine 1909-S VDB to your collection at a more accessible price point than a problem-free example. Despite the details designation, the extreme scarcity of this issue makes it desirable to type collectors, Lincoln cent specialists, and anyone building a classic American coin collection. A true key date in any grade is still a key date - and the 1909-S VDB is one of the most famous coins the U.S. Mint has ever produced.
