1907 USS Glacier Refrigerator Ship Brooklyn Navy Yard Great White Fleet RPPC For Sale

A particularly well-documented early U.S. Navy postcard, with a period handwritten caption across the front reading approximately:

“U.S.S. Glacier, Refrigerator Ship with North Atlantic Fleet in dry dock Navy Yard, Brooklyn, N.Y. Aug. 1907.”

The ship is also identified “U.S.S. GLACIER” directly on the photographic image.

USS Glacier was a U.S. Navy refrigerator/supply ship that served with the Atlantic Fleet during 1907. Later that year she became one of the support vessels accompanying the Atlantic Fleet on the celebrated Great White Fleet cruise. Naval History and Heritage Command records that Glacier joined the Atlantic Fleet in January 1907 and departed New York with the fleet’s support train in December 1907.

This photograph therefore dates from the same year and only months before the Great White Fleet’s departure.

The postcard is postally used and bears:

• Boston, Massachusetts postmark, September 10, 1907
• Charlestown Station machine cancellation
• Green 1-cent Benjamin Franklin postage stamp
• Addressed to Mrs. Grace McNeil, Buckeye, West Virginia

The green one-cent Franklin was the standard postcard-rate stamp of the period; the design was first issued in 1903 and was widely used for the one-cent domestic postcard rate.

Approximate size: 5.5 x 3.5 inches.

Good antique condition with overall fading/toning, surface marks and soiling, edge and corner wear, and a crease near the lower left corner. Please examine the scans carefully; they form part of the condition description.

An appealing piece of pre-WWI U.S. Navy, Brooklyn Navy Yard, postal-history and Great White Fleet-related ephemera, with unusually specific contemporary identification.
