Up for sale is an authentic, hand-written piece of early 20th-century New Jersey insurance history and postal ephemera. This double-sided document features a completed business acknowledgement receipt on one side and a postmarked 1-cent McKinley postal card on the other, dating to January 1906.The handwritten front text reads:
\"Trenton, N.J. 1/6/06. Yours of JAN 2 - 1906 enclosing Draft &c., in payment of claim under Policy No. 140047 Benj. M. Phillips is at hand, and will have immediate attention.\"The card features a highly significant, bold signature from Mills Whittlesey, the General Agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Trenton. Historically, Whittlesey was a prominent local figure, author, and former modern language instructor at the Lawrenceville School. The reverse side is pre-printed and addressed directly to the Northwestern Mutual headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is struck with a clean \"TRENTON, N.J. JAN 8 7-PM 1906\" duplex machine postmark over the built-in McKinley stamp. [1]
