This is an exceptionally rare, original antique circa 1900-1910 Ottoman-era tourist souvenir view booklet titled "Vues de Damas & Baalbeck - Bazar d'Orient," focusing primarily on the historic architecture of Damascus, Syria, and Baalbek, Lebanon. Produced for European Grand Tour travelers, this deluxe publication was edited and printed in France by the renowned firm Photo-Edition A. Breger Frères, located at 9, rue Thénard, Paris.
The landscape-format booklet features a collection of beautifully tinted, double-sided collotype plates capturing pristine turn-of-the-century Middle Eastern landmarks. Featured scenes include multiple panoramic city views from the minarets and Salhié, the monumental entrance to Khan Assad Pacha, and Marjeh Square (Place de Mergé) showcasing the historic telegraph column erected by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Most notably, it features extensive interior and courtyard views of the legendary Umayyad Mosque (La Grande Mosquée), including the courtyard, the arcades, and the interior Shrine of John the Baptist (Tombeau de Saint-Jean). It also captures natural vistas along the Barada River.
The booklet is bound in its original dark green paper wraps featuring elegant Art Nouveau scrolling borders and a calligraphic title banner. It includes thin paper tissue guards between the internal photo plates.
