Three 1904 International Correspondence Schools Percentage Certificates with student work attached. Unique set of collectible ephemera!
The International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania was founded in 1891. Due to an excessive amount of mining accidents, potential miners needed to be educated in mine safety beyond what they learned from their apprenticeships. Therefore, the state of Pennsylvania passed the Mine Safety Act of 1885, requiring miners and inspectors to pass examinations on mine safety.
The first class enrolled 500 miners. Within eight years, over 190,000 students had enrolled in the courses. Courses were eventually offered in forty other engineering trades.
In this lot, there are certificates for student Rollin Bower from 120 Juniper St. in Lockport, NY receiving Percentage Certificates for:
- Planer Work, Part 1 of the Machine Shop Course (score of 98)
- Arithmetic, Section 1 of the Machine Shop Course (score of 99)
- Arithmetic, Section 2 of the Machine Shop Course (score of 100)
Each certificate is attached to Mr. Bower’s work, which is extremely neat and well presented with beautiful penmanship.
The certificates and attached papers are all in excellent condition, considering their age. Each one is three to four pages, stapled.
