1902 Evelyn Nesbit Antique Postcards Lot 4 Eickemeyer Campbell Tiger Head Framed For Sale

Rare and visually striking group of four original 1902 Evelyn Nesbit postcards, presented together in an old fitted four-opening mat and decorative wood frame.

The set includes:

• The Tiger Head – Posed by Evelyn Nesbit

These early color-tinted photographic postcards were issued by A.S. Campbell Art Co. of Elizabeth, New Jersey, with imagery associated with noted American photographer Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr. The series dates to 1902, with the copyright information visible along the lower edges of the cards.

Evelyn Nesbit was one of the most famous models and photographed women of the early 20th century. Her portraits from this period became defining images of turn-of-the-century American beauty and celebrity culture. The animal compositions Beauty and the Beast and The Tiger Head are particularly unusual and visually compelling images from the series.

Each postcard measures approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches and has an early undivided “POST CARD / Authorized by Act of Congress” back. Some period pencil notation is present on the backs. Please see all photographs for condition.

The complete framed presentation measures approximately 19 x 10 inches.

Interesting discovery history: The four postcards were found arranged together in the fitted four-opening mat within this old decorative frame. A later 1941 military/radio troop photograph had been placed over the entire postcard presentation, concealing the cards underneath. The Evelyn Nesbit postcards were discovered when that later photograph was removed.

The fitted mat and coordinated arrangement suggest that the four postcards were an earlier intended presentation in this frame, although the exact date when the postcards were assembled and framed is unknown.

The frame\'s glass was broken and has been removed. No glass is included. The four original postcards, fitted mat and old frame are being sold together as found.

A scarce and unusual surviving group with excellent display appeal for collectors of Evelyn Nesbit, Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr., early photography, Golden Age postcards, theatrical memorabilia and turn-of-the-century popular culture.
