1901 59.73cc 1st DAIMLER-MERCEDES Jellinek Walter GOTSCHKE PrintContent of this listing © But for the Love of Cars. All rights reserved.Beautifully executed print of a Walter Gotschke painting showing the first \"Mercedes,\" the 1901 59.73cc Daimler-Mercedes in Nice, France. In the painting, Gotschke shows Consul-General Emil Jellinek (in the yellow suit) and his daughter, Mercedes (on the running board). Jellinek was instrumental in convincing—and enabling—Gottlieb Daimler to revamp his Phaeton and Phoenix models. The resulting car—named for Jellinek\'s daughter—outclassed the other cars of its time, dominated the 1901 Nice Week competitions, and began a legacy that continues today. (Please pardon any appearance of bowing — this is a photographic artifact. Print is straight and square.)ABOUT THE PRINT
This painting ranks among those that German artist Walter Gotschke considered his best work on one of his most-studied subjects: the Mercedes-Benz racing car in action. Gotschke\'s impressionistic gouaches were painstakingly researched and rendered to portray the true character of the car and the racing style and personality of each racing driver in dramatic racing situations. Gotschke\'s first race sketches were published in 1929 when he was seventeen years old, and he continued to paint thrilling automobile races scenes into his 70s.This print is beautifully rendered on a substantial matte white stock. Would look striking framed. Entire piece measures approximately 12 x 16\" (31 x 41cm); print area measures approximately 7 3/4 x 11 1/2\" (20 x 30cm).Print is new, and handled with gloves to keep it clean and crisp, with a bright, unblemished print surface. Sharp edges and corners. WGMB1.BUY WITH CONFIDENCE
