1899 illustrated industrial advertising postcard issued by the historic Washburn & Moen Manufacturing Company of Worcester, Massachusetts.
Dating exactly from February 16, 1899, this is an incredibly rare, graphically illustrated piece of Gilded Age hardware advertising. The front features an elaborate multi-tonal layout displaying a dense technical illustration of various manufactured mechanical springs under the bold text: \"We Make These Springs... And Many Thousand Varieties Besides. What Springs Do You Use?\" Most significantly for exhibition and fair historians, the header proudly broadcasts the company\'s grand triumph at the White City, reading: \"WE RECEIVED THE HIGHEST AWARD AT THE WORLD\'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION, 1893.\" Washburn & Moen famously supplied the high-tensile steel cables used for the Brooklyn Bridge and pioneered the mass production of barbed wire across the American West.
The reverse address side is written in gorgeous period Spencerian script to the historic Rutland Foundry & Machine Shop of Rutland, Vermont—a major 19th-century locomotive component and heavy iron equipment foundry. It features an exceptionally crisp, bold \"Worcester, Mass. Feb 16 1899\" circular postmark alongside a magnificent, razor-sharp US Flag machine cancellation with an integrated numeral \"1\" over a black 1-Cent Thomas Jefferson printed stamp. An absolute prize for advanced collectors of 1893 Chicago World\'s Fair memorabilia, antique machinery and hardware graphics, early American industrial advertising, or choice late-Victorian postal history.
