Historical Context — Black Diamond Mine (Sand Coulee, Montana)Located in Sand Coulee, southeast of Great Falls.Originally opened in the mid-1880s by the Anaconda Coal Company, later leased or operated by related outfits.Sand Coulee coal fueled railroads and the smelters at Great Falls.The town was a major coal center until natural gas displaced coal in the early 20th century.By 1896, the Black Diamond Mine was one of the active producing mines in the Sand Coulee field.Weigh slips like this were used for tracking coal loads hauled by wagon or later by tram/rail.J. J. Doherty appears in 1890s Sand Coulee records as a mine weighmaster, a common position in company coal mines.
