1893 Adolphus Busch SIGNED Anheuser Busch / Alamo Brewery LETTER, Budweiser LOGO:
$1200.00

- St. Louis BREWER Adolphus Busch SIGNED Letter -- 1893 Anheuser Busch Brewing Ass’n LETTERHEAD -- Regarding ALAMO BREWERY in San Antonio, Texas -- Anheuser-Busch Company ICONIC “Budweiser” LOGO -

This will be my LOWEST price on this letter. If you are seriously interested in purchasing it, you should do so now before it is returned to my early brewing collection.

EXCESSIVELY RARE typed-letter signed / autographed by St. Louis BREWER Adolphus Busch – on the letterhead of the “ANHEUSER-BUSCH BREWING ASSOCIATION” and concerning the ALAMO BREWERY of San Antonio, Texas. In the upper left corner of the letter is the colorful, illustrated image of the Anheuser-Busch Company’s ICONIC “Budweiser” LABEL or LOGO. Letterhead was produced by “The Milwaukee Litho. & Engr. Co.”.

The letter is dated February 7th ’93” (at St. Louis) and was addressed to “Mr. Reagan Houston” of San Antonio, Texas. The ALAMO BREWING Company was originally founded by Adolphus Busch and a group of San Antonio businessmen. It was purchased by the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association in 1895, about two years after this letter was written.

The ICONIC Budweiser label depicted in this letterhead was officially used by Anheuser-Busch from about 1910 to 1945 as their OFFICIAL company LOGO. This letter represents an extremely EARLY use of the Budweiser LABEL, about 17 years before it became the company’s logo for a period of time. This Budweiser label is still recognized by many today as being synonymous with the company’s name and image.

Adolphus Busch’s SIGNATURE / AUTOGRAPH is extremely difficult to find in any form, particularly on Anheuser Busch Brewing’s illustrated letterhead with an EARLY image of the famous Budweiser LOGO. Over the past 30+ years, I have observed maybe 4 or 5 items genuinely signed by Adolphus Busch. This is the ONLY signed piece by him with the Budweiser label / logo that I have ever encountered. Letter is worthy of the FINEST Anheuser-Busch Brewing collection.

Letter reads in full, “Dear Sir:- Conforming with your request of the 4th inst., I return herewith the papers in regard to the Alamo Brewery. With kind regards, Yours truly, A. Busch (SIGNED)”.

ADOLPHUS BUSCH (1839 – 1913) was a German born immigrant who came to America in 1857 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1861, he married the daughter (Lilly) of Eberhard Anheuser, a wealthy soap manufacturer and the owner of the local Bavarian Brewery. At the outset of the Civil War and a month after his wedding, Adolphus joined the Union Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal after serving his enlistment. Thereafter, Busch became a successful salesman / businessman and eventually joined the management of his father-in-law’s struggling Bavarian Brewery. With Busch’s leadership and business acumen as a catalyst, the brewery’s fortunes improved dramatically and the company incorporated with Adolphus and his wife as the majority stockholders. In 1879, the corporation’s name was changed to the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. When Eberhard Anheuser died in 1880, Adolphus assumed the role of President. By 1885, Anheuser Busch had become the leading brewer in St. Louis and the top selling brewery in the country by the late 1890’s. In 1891, Busch became the first major brewer to sign a labor agreement with a labor union. In 1895, Anheuser-Busch purchased the ALAMO BREWING COMPANY of San Antonio, which Adolphus Busch had founded earlier along with a group of San Antonio businessmen. Busch was considered a pioneer in mechanical refrigeration and diesel engine building. He was also a wealthy philanthropist.

CONDITION: letter measures about 8 ¼ x 10 7/8 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT original condition with one horizontal and two vertical mailing folds. There is a small tear in the interior of the letter about an inch and a quarter long, but with NO loss of paper. This tear is located just below the “Anheuser-Busch” in the letterhead and to the left of the date (February 7th ’93). This was likely a spindle hole originally that turned into a short tear. Letter also has a couple very tiny, insignificant edge chips that are mentioned for the sake of accuracy – along the very top of the letter, along the very bottom, and on one side. These minor faults aside, this is a remarkably well preserved letter with a much sought after signature on a KILLER letterhead (see SCANS). PLEASE NOTE: images have been taken with BOTH a flat bed scanner (FIRST nine) and with my cell phone (LAST three). You can see a slight variation (COLOR) in the appearance among these images, but the actual color of the letter is closer to those taken by my cellphone (LAST three scans). The signature / autograph of Adolphus Busch is guaranteed authentic. Winning buyer to pay $25 for shipping, postage & INSURANCE. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. PLEASE READ: I have been buying + selling American historical autographs & documents for over 40 years and a former member of both the “Manuscript Society” and the UACC. We ship everything INSURED (thru the USPS) with a value over $50. This helps us know that the item you took the time to purchase arrived safely. Packages are shipped out within 1 – 3 business days, but typically the next day. Please understand, we do not make any money on shipping costs, but rather run a deficit over the course of a year. Most buyers don’t realize that charges me a 13.6 percent FEE on the item sold, an additional 13.6 percent FEE on my quoted shipping charges, and another 13.6 percent FEE on the sales tax that collects on the item. Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my response over the last 20 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me. offer with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
