1890’s Long John Reilly cabinet card. Published by Brownwell of Cincy. Long John was born and raised in Cincy. He died there. Long John played his entire MLB career in his home city. He played for the Reds, but he also played for the Cincinnati Stars. The Stars were a Reds predecessor. They were dropped from the National League in 1880 for refusing the league’s mandate of no alcohol sold at the games. My Detroit Wolvrtines(defunct-not really my team) replaced the Stars. The Reds were formed shortly after. Long John played firstbase. Not sure if he earned his nickname with his teammates or the ladies. Maybe both. Career .289 hitter over a 10 year MLB career. Card is a little over 4 by 6 inch in size. Slightly trimmed at the bottom. Feel free to ask questions. Long John has a shared record for 3 cycles and he is a member of the Reds team HOF.
