1885 CHAPLAINCY LICENCE – FREDERICK TEMPLE DD – BISHOP OF LONDON – RED SEAL
An original Victorian ecclesiastical licence, issued from London House, St James’s Square, dated 21 July 1885, authorising the Rev. R. T. Lawrence, Vicar of St Stephen’s, Bow, to act as Chaplain to the English Congregation at Arolla (Switzerland) under the Colonial and Continental Church Society. The appointment covers five Sundays, from 2 August to 30 August 1885.
Signed in Temple’s characteristic Latinised episcopal form: “F. Londin:”
With a clear, embossed red wafer seal, reading: “The seal of Frederick Temple, DD Bishop of London. 1885.”
Temple had only recently been appointed Bishop of London (April 1885), making this an early‑tenure episcopal document. He later became Archbishop of Canterbury (1896–1902), adding strong collector interest.
A fine example of late‑19th‑century ecclesiastical administration, with a desirable early Temple signature and personalised seal.

Frederick Temple (Nov 1821 – Dec 1902) was an English academic, teacher and churchman, who served as Bishop of Exeter (1869–1885), Bishop of London (1885–1896) and Archbishop of Canterbury class="MsoNormal">From a single owner collection of 3,000+ items. A chaotic uncatalogued miscellany of items from 17th to 20th Century.
