Graham House, also known as Graham's Forge, was built beginning around 1840 by David Graham, remembered as the first iron master of southwestern Virginia. He operated mines, furnaces, a forge, and a mill on the property. His son, Maj. David Pierce Graham, a Confederate veteran, inherited the estate in 1870 and continued expanding it, and the surrounding community took the Graham's Forge name.
This card was mailed care of that very estate, from an unidentified correspondent in nearby Speedwell offering wheat for sale and reporting a conversation with a Mr. Crockett, a name closely tied to the region, about the crop. It's ordinary rural commerce passing directly through one of Wythe County's most storied addresses.
The Graham mansion still stands today at Fosters Falls, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, one of Wythe County's most recognized historic landmarks more than 180 years after its first section was built.
