The New York Metropolitans were a professional baseball teamthat played in New York City from 1880 to 1887 in the American Association.Known as the “Mets,” they captured the 1884 American Association pennant andcompeted in the 1884 World Series against the Providence Grays.
The Mets were among the first major teams to play in thePolo Grounds and helped shape early professional baseball in New York.
Despite on-field success, financial struggles and leagueinstability led to the team folding after the 1887 season, with several playersand assets later absorbed by other clubs.
