Charles J. Prescott served as principal of Hebron Academy in Oxford County, Maine, the same county as Fryeburg, before later moving his family south to New Jersey. This card catches him mid-errand in New York, borrowing stationery off a bookstore counter to dash off a quick note home to his young son.
The contents read like a father keeping a child updated on small household news: a friend, a chemist at Colgate, sent over a box of soap as a gift; the cistern got cleaned out; Grandpa, likely David N. Ropes, who would go on to become Orange, New Jersey\'s first mayor, was seen at his office and doing well. Prescott signs off telling his son to be good and help his mother, then promises to meet him at the station.
That son grew into a career worth noting in his own right. Standish Prescott trained as a civil engineer at MIT, served in the Spanish-American War, and spent thirty years in the Maintenance-of-Way Department of the New York Central Railroad before retiring in 1936. This card is a small, personal artifact from his childhood, written by the father who likely shaped his path toward engineering and discipline.
