James Edward Mahoney (December 15, 1858/1859 – June 9, 1926) was a U.S. Marine Corps officer who served with distinction in the Spanish-American War and later received a temporary promotion to brigadier general.
Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1881 and was commissioned into the Marine Corps. During the Spanish-American War, as a first lieutenant with Company E of the 1st Marine (Huntington’s) Battalion, he took part in the landings and fighting at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He was recognized for distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy on June 11, 1898. For this, he was appointed captain by brevet (effective from that date; formalized in 1901) and later awarded the Marine Corps Brevet Medal (one of only 23 Marine officers to receive it).
He continued serving in places including Panama, Veracruz (Mexico), and Cuba, and took part in the Pancho Villa Expedition. He received a temporary promotion to brigadier general (around 1916–1918) and retired in 1919 as a colonel of Marines. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
