1877 first edition of The History of the Twenty-Ninth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Late War of the Rebellion, by William H. Osborne, a member of the regiment. Printed in Boston by Albert J. Wright, 79 Milk Street.

Bound in the original royal-blue cloth with gilt spine and cover titles, gilt 29th Regiment insignia on the front board, and gilt eagle on the spine. Measures 9.25 × 6 inches; 393 pages.

Includes the bookplate of James Bryant Conant—President of Harvard University (1933–1953), chemist, WWII scientific leader, and postwar U.S. High Commissioner for Germany—adding significant historical provenance.

The volume opens with Osborne’s 1877 preface (East Bridgewater, MA) thanking Governor Rice and Adjutant General Cunningham. Chapters trace the regiment’s formation, early service at Fort Monroe and Newport News, campaigns at Antietam, Vicksburg, Petersburg, and the final Grand Review in Boston.
Appendices include complete casualty and burial lists by company (“The Dead of the Twenty-Ninth Regiment,” pp. 372–383) and the closing account of the Boston survivors’ parade in 1865.

A scarce Massachusetts regimental history, admired for its firsthand narrative and exhaustive company rosters—made all the more desirable by the Harvard-Conant provenance.

PROVENANCE NOTE

From the library of James Bryant Conant (1893–1978), pioneering chemist and educator who modernized Harvard, helped organize America’s WWII scientific programs, and served as U.S. High Commissioner in postwar Germany. His personal ex-libris bookplate appears on the front pastedown.
