1874 Winslow Homer Chinese New York · Victor Hugo Guernsey — Harpers March HARPERS WEEKLY · March 7, 1874
Complete Issue + Supplement Pages · New Homer inside a Chinese club-house on Baxter Street — one of the earliest serious illustrations of Chinese American community life in New York. Thomas Nast on the front page. The royal wedding of the century across a double-page centerfold. A soup house opening in the Five Points. Hudson River ice harvesting in four scenes. And a supplement devoted entirely to Victor Hugo in his Guernsey exile — his house, his study, his daily walk — alongside a childrens hospital and an ice skating scene in St. Petersburg. This is March 7, 1874, and it sees the world THE MAIN ISSUE — EVERY WINSLOW HOMER — \"THE CHINESE IN NEW YORK — SCENE IN A BAXTER STREET CLUB-HOUSE\"
Full page. This is the print that makes the issue — and one of the most historically significant illustrations Winslow Homer ever contributed to Harpers Weekly. Baxter Street ran through the heart of Five Points in lower Manhattan, home to New Yorks emerging Chinatown. Chinese immigrants — most from Guangdong Province — had been arriving in New York in significant numbers, driven by the same forces that brought their countrymen to build the transcontinental railroad. Their community in lower Manhattan was the subject of intense curiosity, fear, and occasional genuine sympathy from the white mainstream press. Homers image — men gathered inside a club-house, the walls hung with lanterns and Chinese decorations, figures at leisure or at cards — is one of the earliest and most sympathetic serious documentary illustrations of Chinese American community life ever published in a major American newspaper. It treats its subjects with the same dignity Homer brought to every human scene. For Chinese American history collectors, Asian American history enthusiasts, Five Points history buffs, Chinatown New York historians, and Winslow Homer collectors — this page is a primary document of the Chinese American experience in the Gilded Age.🎨 FRONT PAGE — THOMAS NAST: \"THE GOOD AND BAD SPIRITS AT WAR\"
Full front page — Nast in his most allegorical mode, angels and demons battling over the soul of American politics in the turbulent spring of 1874.🍲 \"OPENING THE SIXTH WARD SOUP HOUSE IN CENTRE STREET\"
The Sixth Ward was the political heart of Five Points — the most famous slum in American history, home to waves of Irish, Italian, and African American communities in the lower Manhattan tenements. The Panic of 1873 had thrown thousands out of work, and by early 1874 soup houses and charitable food kitchens were opening across New York to feed the urban poor. This illustration documents one such opening on Centre Street — the crowd gathered, the ladling of soup, the civic and charitable effort to feed a city in economic crisis. For Five Points history collectors, Irish American history enthusiasts, New York City poverty history buffs, and urban welfare history researchers.👑 DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD — \"THE MARRIAGE OF PRINCE ALFRED & THE GRAND DUCHESS MARIE\"
The royal wedding of the decade across Harpers grandest format. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh — Queen Victorias second son — married Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia, in January 1874. The union of British royalty and the Russian imperial Romanov dynasty was the most significant royal event in years, and Harpers devotes its full double-page centerfold to depicting the ceremony. For British royal history collectors, Russian imperial history enthusiasts, Victorian monarchy buffs, and Romanov family collectors.🧊 FULL PAGE — \"THE ICE CROP ON THE HUDSON\" — FOUR SCENES
Four illustrations documenting the Hudson River ice harvest — one of the great industries of 19th-century New York. Each winter, thousands of workers (including many African American laborers from Hudson Valley communities) cut massive blocks of river ice, stored them in icehouses packed with sawdust, and shipped them to New York City for use in homes, restaurants, and hospitals throughout the summer. The ice industry on the Hudson employed entire communities along the river. These four scenes capture the full operation: the cutting, the horses hauling, the storage, the river in winter. For Hudson Valley history collectors, African American labor history researchers, New York industry history enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by how cities functioned before refrigeration.⛪ PORTRAIT — \"THE REV. CHARLES KINGSLEY\"
The Reverend Charles Kingsley — English clergyman, novelist, social reformer, and author of \"The Water Babies\" — was visiting America in early 1874. His portrait appears here during that visit. Kingsley was one of the most beloved and controversial figures in Victorian intellectual life: a Christian Socialist who believed the Church should care for the poor, a naturalist who corresponded with Darwin, and a writer whose childrens stories shaped generations of young readers. For Victorian literature collectors, Christian history enthusiasts, and British intellectual history THE SUPPLEMENT FOUR ILLUSTRATIONS — \"VICTOR HUGO IN GUERNSEY\"
The supplements centerpiece — a full page of four illustrations devoted to Victor Hugo in his years of political exile on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel:· **Exterior of Hauteville House** — Hugos home in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, where he lived from 1856 to 1870 after being driven from France by Louis Napoleon. The house — which Hugo purchased with the proceeds from Les Misérables — overlooks the Norman town and the sea.· **The Oak Gallery — Hauteville House** — The extraordinary interior that Hugo designed himself: every surface covered with his own carvings, tapestries, mirrors, and ornamentation. The Oak Gallery is one of the most remarkable examples of a writers self-expression in architectural form in European history.· **Victor Hugo In His Study** — The great novelist at his writing desk, surrounded by the manuscripts and objects of a lifetimes work. Hugo was one of the most productive writers in French literary history; this is the room where much of it happened.· **Victor Hugo Walking in the St. Martins Road** — An older, bearded Hugo on his daily walk, the Guernsey countryside behind him. The article accompanying these illustrations describes Hugos daily life in exile: his vegetarian diet, his habit of writing standing up, his Wednesday dinners for the poor of the neighborhood, his walks overlooking the sea.Hugo had already returned to France by 1874, but Hauteville House and his Guernsey years were a major subject of public interest. For Victor Hugo collectors, French literature enthusiasts, Les Misérables history buffs, Guernsey history collectors, and French political exile history researchers — this supplement page is extraordinary.🏥 FULL PAGE — \"THE CONVALESCENT — A SKETCH AT A CHILDRENS HOSPITAL\"
A large, beautifully rendered supplement illustration of a Victorian childrens hospital ward — a convalescing child attended by a nurse, other young patients in the background, the medical and human warmth of the childrens hospital captured with genuine feeling. For Victorian medical history collectors, pediatric hospital history enthusiasts, and nursing history buffs.⛸️ \"A COOL FLIRTATION — A SKETCH IN THE SKATING GARDENS, ST. PETERSBURG\"
A supplement illustration of Victorian ice skating in the covered skating gardens of St. Petersburg, Russia — elegant figures in winter dress, the architecture of the imperial capital visible behind them. Social life among Russias elite, captured for American readers.🚢 \"THREE CHEERS FOR THE GOOD SHIP GHOST\"
