Sent December 17, 1873 from the Union Banking Company in Fredonia, Chautauqua County, this pre-printed collection notice acknowledges an item of $86 plus interest received from Marsellus Bros in Rochester. Fredonia was a village of firsts: it was the site of the nation's first natural gas well (1825) and in 1873 — the same year this card was sent — hosted the founding meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

The recipient, Marsellus Bros of Rochester, comes from a family that had deep Dutch roots in New York stretching back to the 1690s in Schenectady, and various family members were active in commerce across western New York.
