THOMAS NAST ORIGINAL 1871- WOODCUT POLITICAL CARTOON- “NO NATIVE AMERICAN VOTING / CITIZENSHIP ALLOWED”

This powerful illustration reflects the complex political landscape of the American Reconstruction era following the Civil War. In 1871, the federal government was focused on reshaping citizenship rights, leading to the ratification of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.

While these legal shifts granted voting rights to newly naturalized European immigrants and formerly enslaved citizens, indigenous Native Americans were pointedly excluded.

The federal government legally classified Native Americans as members of independent tribes or domestic dependents, denying them US citizenship and access to the ballot box.

This political cartoon was originally done by THOMAS NAST , one of the most famous and prolific of the skilled political artists of his time. His early work in wood-cut prints, are acknowledged to be in highest demand , and remain today at the top of today’s collectors’ lists from the works of this genre in this era .p

Thomas Nasts cartoon captures the era’s growing public conversation and populist concerns regarding who was allowed to participate in American democracy, a struggle for franchise equality that would not be legally resolved until the “Indian Citizenship Act of 1924”.

( Does this help you visualize current political similarities, even today? - Who Knew?)

This is a guaranteed authentic original single page leaf wood engraving by famed political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Titled “MOVE ON”, this historically significant piece was published inside the April 22 1871 edition of Harpers Weekly on page 361.

The print features the artists signature etched directly into the printing plate matrix in the lower left corner. The reverse side of the sheet contains intact, readable news articles and period text from the same 1871 issue, which serves as definitive proof of its historical age and authenticity. I provided one close-up photo showing how the print impressions from back, look on front side ,which can be seen with higher magnification. (The mat is archivally mounted with reversible archival tape ,as is commonly used for print mounting.)

The full page inside ,measures approximately 15.5 inches long with the engraving width approx. 10 3/4” high. (Mat window opening “inside measure” of apprx. 13 1/2” long x 9 4/5”high. Mat border is approx. 2” all around edge .

Condition Report:

The central engraved image is in very nice condition, remaining dark, crisp, and clear with no heavy foxing or staining. There are some minor tears along the outer paper margin at the very top edge. These edge tears are purely cosmetic and do not touch the artwork. Some earlier archival repairs have been made on some of the edge tears , to stabilize the paper, and minimize tear continuing further. They are completely covered, hidden, and protected by the included archival display mat.

I am showing a close-up photo showing it was printed on a high rag newsprint originally. There is some page edge darkening, due to oxidation, but nothing extreme, and not extending into the main image.

Reviewing all photos provided, will give you access to the image of the plate and its parts , so you can evaluate for yourself the actual surface condition of what you will receive. Provided photos are considered the actual basis for condition of this item.

Please ask if you have any questions.

Shipped flat with cardboard protector boards tightly encasing the mounted woodcut. Insured for full amount.
