A dramatic pair of ornate bronze ewers with richly sculpted details and colorful floral decoration. Their tall, sweeping silhouettes make a striking display on a mantel, console, or sideboard.
Each ewer features a high curved spout, an elaborate scrolling handle with a raised finial, a decorative face motif, and a richly ornamented circular foot. The rounded metal bodies are finished with a textured ground and colorful flowers and foliage. Display them together as a matched pair or let them bring a touch of historic European grandeur to a room.
The design is in the taste of the Napoleon III period, combining exuberant historicist ornament with Rococo-inspired forms. French or Italian origin is possible; the maker, country of manufacture, and exact date have not been established.
XRF readings indicate the ewers are made of leaded tin bronze, with copper, tin, and lead present in the tested metal.
A small cut-in “XV” mark is visible on one component; its purpose is unknown. The central body sections are attached with screws.
Condition: visible surface wear, patina, scratches, and areas of uneven finish consistent with age and use. Please study all photos carefully; they show the exact pair being offered.
