Original 1869 handwritten blacksmith account/billhead from John E. Grant of Wrentham, Massachusetts, made out to R. A. Mellen. Measures approximately 6.25 x 15.5 inches.
Dated Wrentham, Sept. 30, 1869, this is a particularly nice early occupational document recording months of work performed by a local blacksmith. The individual entries provide a great snapshot of the everyday work of a 19th-century smith, including shoeing horses and oxen, setting tires, ironing a harrow, ironing a wagon, mending chains, repairing a horse rake, mending a mowing-machine spring, and other wagon/farm equipment work.
The account begins in April 1869 and continues through September. The reverse is identified in period handwriting “John E Grant / Blacksmith.” A small U.S. Internal Revenue revenue stamp is affixed near the bottom and appears hand-cancelled Sept. 30, 1869, adding another desirable element for revenue-stamp and postal/fiscal-history collectors.
A strong piece of Wrentham MA local history, as well as an interesting document for collectors of blacksmithing, horseshoeing, oxen, early agriculture, farm machinery, wagons, trades and occupations, and 19th-century American business records.
