For sale is a genuine, guaranteed authentic 1866 double-page centerfold wood engraving titled "Santa Claus And His Works" by the legendary political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Published just after the Civil War in Harper's Weekly, this historic, landmark piece of Americana forever shaped our modern image of Santa Claus—popularizing his workshop, his "Good and Bad Children" ledger, and establishing his home at the North Pole.
Because it is a true centerfold from a preserved 1866 newspaper issue, it features authentic 1866 text/advertisements on the reverse side and shows original binding fold lines.
Measures 16 x 21-1/2 inches. It was in a frame, with matting. I took it out of the frame to examine (frame was very slightly damaged and I discarded it). There are three (3) small pieces of mounting tape at top border that secured the print to matt backing (see scan). There are some small areas around the edges that have archival tape applied, to mend and strengthen the paper. There are some old pale water marks around edges also. Plus vertical fold at center (as published). It looked very nice in the frame, so I know it will "frame nicely" should you wish to do so. An important "Santa Claus" print.
