Offered is an antique stereoview card documenting the aftermath of the Great Fire of Portland, Maine, which took place on July 4, 1866.The stereoview shows the extensive destruction along Middle Street, looking down the street from Free Street, with the U.S. Custom House visible in the distance. Several people can be seen among the piles of rubble, giving a remarkable glimpse into Portland in the days following the fire.The front of the card is printed:“GREAT FIRE IN PORTLAND, ME. JULY 4TH, 1866.”“Photographed July 13th, 14th, and 15th. By J. P. SOULE.”The view is identified as:“No. 469. Looking down Middle St., from Free St., U. S.
