1865 Civil War Appomattox Surrender Tree Relic Pendant with coin silver plaques
Grant’s emissary, Lt. Col. Orville Babcock, found Lee resting under an apple tree near the Appomattox River to receive Grant’s initial letter proposing surrender terms. This is a relic of that tree.
The relic pendant measures 1 1/4" tall including the bale, 1" wide, and a touch less than 1/8" thick. Condition as shown in the pics.
The inscription on the heart shaped plaque reads:
A piece of the Tree under which Gen. Lee surrendered to Gen. Grant April 9, 1865.
The plaque shaped like a star is hard to read. Looks like the name of a soldier and his regiment:
V. Name?Co B?15
There was a crescent shaped plaque beneath that which is no longer there.
From my stepfather's collection. He had this when he married my mom in 1981.
