Up for sale/sale is a highly desirable, historically significant American Civil War Union patriotic postal cover. This envelope features a rare, highly collectible wartime postmark from Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), dated just weeks before the historic Confederate siege and surrender of the town.
🗓️ Historical Context & Key Features:
• The Postmark: Hand-stamped with a circular datestamp from HARPERS FERRY, VA. dated AUG 21 (1862). The cancellation ink is clear enough to read the location and date. This puts the mailing exactly three weeks prior to Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's famous Siege of Harpers Ferry (September 12–15, 1862).
• The Postage Stamp: Features a genuine 3-cent rose George Washington stamp (1861 Issue, Scott #65), neatly tied to the cover by the Harpers Ferry cancellation.
• The Patriotic Cachet: A beautifully printed Union patriotic design on the left side featuring crossed American flags decorated with ribbons. Underneath the graphic is a poignant, period-specific political quote: "A nation of Freemen that moment shall fail. When there Stars shall be trailed in the dust."
• The Addressee: Elegantly addressed in mid-19th-century Spencerian cursive script to Miss Clara Maltby in Oberlin, Ohio. Historical records note Miss Maltby was a notable student who graduated from the rigorous Classical Course at Oberlin College during this exact year (1862).
