Original February 1856 issue of The New England Farmer: A Monthly Agricultural Journal for the Farm and Garden, published in Boston and edited by Simon Brown with Frederic Holbrook of Vermont as associate editor. Measures approx. 7\" x 11\" and runs 48 pages (paginated 57–104) plus the original wrapper and ads.

Also included is a separate subscription receipt, dated March 3, 1856, billing Rev. Silas Green for five copies and signed by Joel Nourse, a noted Boston agricultural publisher and partner in Ruggles, Nourse & Mason, one of the nation’s leading agricultural implement firms. Rev. Silas Green (c.1800–1874) was a prominent Methodist minister who served churches in Massachusetts and New Hampshire—including East Salisbury, Haverhill, Manchester, and Rochester—making it highly likely this was his personal order for parish or community distribution. He later died in Epsom, New Hampshire, where he is buried.

  • On Harvesting Corn

  • Cheap Oil for Kitchen Lamps

  • The Tyson Pear (with illustration)

  • Scott’s Grain Mill (with illustration)

  • Instruction in Agriculture

  • Portraits from the Field and Farm Yard

  • Reports from New York & Essex Agricultural Societies

  • Domestic hints and “Ladies’ Department” household notes

Ads on the rear cover include notices for agricultural implements by Ruggles, Nourse, Mason & Co., fruit & flower trees, grape vines, bounties, and commercial colleges.
