DESCRIPTION

Original 1851 Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Williams College for the Academic Year 1851–52, published at Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1851 and printed by Roberts, Printer, Utica. A particularly interesting early Williams College catalogue documenting the college’s administration, faculty, complete student body, curriculum, admissions requirements, expenses, facilities, and academic calendar in the middle of the 19th century.

Measures approximately 5.75 x 9 inches and contains 24 numbered pages.

Contents include:

  • Trustees, including Rev. Mark Hopkins, Timothy Mather Cooley, Charles Augustus Dewey, Daniel Noble Dewey, Emerson Davis, Horatio Brinsmade, George N. Briggs, John Todd and others
  • Faculty headed by Rev. Mark Hopkins, D.D., President and Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy
  • Faculty members Ebenezer Emmons, Albert Hopkins, Joseph Alden, Edward Lasell, Nathaniel H. Griffin, John Tatlock and Paul A. Chadbourne
  • Extensive student directories divided into Senior, Junior, Sophomore and Freshman classes
  • Students are identified by name, residence and college room or boarding location
  • 208 students are recorded in the summary: 51 Seniors, 39 Juniors, 59 Sophomores and 59 Freshmen
  • Geographic student summary includes New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Ohio, Illinois, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, Russia and the Sandwich Islands
  • 1851–52 academic CALENDAR, including commencement, terms, vacations, examinations and exhibitions
  • Detailed Terms of Admission
  • Freshman through Senior Course of Instruction
  • Courses include Latin, Greek, mathematics, surveying, navigation, rhetoric, political economy, natural philosophy, chemistry, astronomy, botany, anatomy, zoology, intellectual philosophy, moral science and theology
  • Information concerning lectures and the college\'s Astronomical Observatory and Magnetic Observatory
  • Discussion of scientific apparatus and collections in mineralogy and geology
  • References to the gymnasium and the Horticultural and Landscape Gardening Association
  • Rules concerning declamations, attendance, examinations, public exhibitions and vacations
  • Period expenses, including tuition of $10 per term, room rent, library charges, board, washing, fuel and lights
  • Information concerning Williams College, literary society, Franklin and theological libraries

An especially interesting feature is the presence of period handwritten notations and symbols beside numerous student names throughout the class lists. These appear to be old organizational or affiliation-type annotations, but their exact meaning has not been established, so they are left for further research rather than identified speculatively.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
