DESCRIPTION:
Original 1849 printed “An Abstract of the List of Alien Passengers, Bonded, Under the Law of May 10, 1848, From September 1, to December 31, 1849.”
A remarkable early immigration and passenger record containing extensive tabular information on individual alien passengers. The printed columns record date, name, age, occupation, birthplace, last residence, name of vessel, port of departure, names of obligors, residence, and remarks.
The passengers shown are predominantly from Ireland, with additional entries from England, Wales and Sweden. Ports of departure shown include Liverpool, Cork, Galway, Eastport and Gottenburg, among others.
Numerous vessels are identified, including Ship Uriel, Ocean Queen, William Jarvis, Charlemagne, Michael Angelo, J. H. Glidden, Hope, Plymouth Rock, Epaminondas, Waldron, Townsend, Franchise, Henry Ware, Medora, Robert, Admiral, Fides, Albion, Schooner David and others.
The Remarks column is particularly interesting and records circumstances of individual immigrants, with entries such as orphan, widow, sick, feeble, destitute, pauper, no money, from poor-house, mother died on passage, father and mother died on the passage, children died on the passage, going to Canada, going to New York, going to Illinois, and other personal circumstances.
The document is numbered through page 36 and represents an unusually detailed genealogical and immigration record from the period of heavy Irish immigration in the late 1840s.
Condition shows substantial age and use. Pages have toning, foxing/spotting, edge wear, small tears and losses. There is conspicuous old red staining along the bound/inner edge, extending onto portions of a number of pages.
