Original 1847 manuscript work receipts associated with Baker Mills in Dorchester, Massachusetts, documenting payments made directly by Tileston & Hollingsworth, the prominent 19th-century paper manufacturers.
Dated Dorchester, September 14, 1847, the document contains three separate handwritten acknowledgments of payment:
Samuel C. Howard — $15.00
Robert Charles — $16.59
Gustav Constantin Schall — $41.71
Total payments: $73.30
Each man acknowledges receiving his payment from Tileston & Hollingsworth (the final receipt abbreviates the payer to Hollingsworth).
The reverse provides particularly useful context, docketed:
“Baker Mills / Receipts for Work”
followed by the names of the three men and Sept. 15.
This appears to document three men being paid directly by Tileston & Hollingsworth for work associated with the Baker Mills property. The exact nature of their work is not stated, so they are not represented here as regular mill employees or as performing any particular trade.
The Baker Mills connection is especially interesting. Walter Baker owned paper-mill property at the Dorchester/Milton Lower Mills, and surviving records from this same archive document Tileston & Hollingsworth leasing Baker\'s paper mill during this period. Tileston & Hollingsworth operated an extensive paper-manufacturing business along the Neponset River.
A nice primary-source record of the labor and business activity surrounding an important early Massachusetts paper-manufacturing operation, with three named workers/tradesmen and their individual payments preserved.
