Original 1835 Butler County, Pennsylvania Court Documents – Sheriff’s Writ and Judgment
Offered is a fascinating piece of early 19th-century Pennsylvania legal history:
• March 1835 Sheriff’s Writ
Issued by the Court of Common Pleas in Butler County commanding the Sheriff to seize and sell property of James Gilchrist to satisfy a debt owed to Samuel A. & E. Punnance. Includes a detailed land description in Centre Township, mentions neighbors (William Watson, Jeremiah Weeks, Thomas Gilchrist, etc.), court costs of $7.50, and is signed by Peter Duffy with embossed court seal. Witnessed by Honorable John Bredin.
The back:
Notes the $30 debt judgment from 1834 against James Gilchrist in favor of Saml. A & E Punnance, with additional costs noted.
Historical Context:
This document show a classic 1830s civil debt collection case where the court ordered property seizure after Gilchrist failed to pay. Excellent primary source for Pennsylvania local history, land records, or Gilchrist/Punnance family show expected age toning, Tears in folds, folds, light wear, and minor foxing consistent with 191-year-old paper. One small ink spot on the writ. Overall readable condition for the era.
