Up for sale is an elegant antique salty century French Empire personal seal stamp, executed in a richly ornamented Empire neo-Baroque style. The handle is beautifully decorated with intricate organic rocaille motifs and finely cast ornamental detail, giving the piece a refined and luxurious presence.
The intaglio is finely engraved with a quartered coat of arms under a coronet, topped by a crest of what appears to be a wolf. The shield is divided into quarters with traditional heraldic hatching, and it includes chevrons, fleurs-de-lis, lions and wolf-like beasts (passant and rampant). Foliate mantling surrounds the shield. The engraving is crisp and detailed, with good depth.
A wax impression is shown in the photos, so you can see the design the right way round (an intaglio is engraved in mirror image).
Typical of 19th-century French seals used to seal letters, made for a gentleman’s desk or watch fob. I cant attribute the arms to a specific family, so it is sold as an unidentified armorial seal. A great find for heraldry researchers and collectors of antique seals, wax seals and desk items.
Condition: Excellent antique condition for its age, with normal age-related patina enhancing its character. Please review all photos carefully, as they form part of the item description.
