Up for sale is this 1817 George III-eraEcclesiastical Documentfrom Fort William in Bengal, India.The handwritten manuscript is on heavyparchmentpaper. This British Colonial record relates to the probate andadministration for the estate ofCharles Crichton. ThePetitioner,Alexander Colvin the Younger,whose affidavit, along with the last will and testament of Mr. Crichton (marked Exhibit A), a power of attorney (Exhibit B), and another affidavit (Exhibit C), was read before the court.The text orders that the Registrar of the Court be granted leave to issue the usual citations under the seal of the court to the next of kin and creditors of the deceased
The document was issued by theEcclesiastical division ofthe Supreme Court of Judicature, which handled wills, estates, and probate matters for European subjects in India. As an official document, it is signed at the bottom byDempster Heming, Esq. (Registrarat Fort William), and dated9th August 1817. To the left side a large, highly detailed red wax wafer seal embossed with the British Royal Coat of Arms, is affixed.
Provenance: This document was acquired by ahistorical ephemera dealer based in Bandra, India(a suburb of Mumbai) as part of a large collection of antiquarian legal documents from Fort William in Bengal.
