This is a scarce early hand made wood treenware pounce pot or sander from around the 1830-1840s era ..In the early days of writing with quill pens, the ink would often splotch or run. This sander would have been kept handy to dispense fine sand or pounce to dry up the excess ink, or to "erase" a mistake...Beautiful maple or light wood hand turned on a lathe....round spool shape with footed base & flared out hollow rim...sunken decorative rings around the sides...removeable insert.....3 1/8"tall.....3 1/8"across rim...small holes inside deep sunken top.....Excellent condition with no chips or damage. A rare form!..From our personal collection, but from an old New England estate originally....
