Specialist clockmakers in Europe and North America built large mechanical movements to drive public clocks on church towers, railway stations, and municipal buildings. They forged heavy iron frames and cut brass gears by hand or with early industrial machinery to ensure the gear train could withstand decades of continuous outdoor operation. Each movement used a system of weights and a pendulum to regulate the turning force before transmitting it up through long rods to the hands on the dial outside.

Town councils and railway companies used these robust timekeepers to keep entire communities synchronized before the widespread adoption of personal watches. The keeper of the clock had to climb up into the tower regularly to wind the heavy driving weights by hand and apply fresh oil to the moving steel pivots. Many of these mechanical movements were eventually disconnected and replaced by electric or quartz systems when public buildings were modernized in the twentieth century.
