An outstanding Revolutionary War Pennsylvania governmental document connecting John Bayard, David Rittenhouse, and the operation of Pennsylvania's wartime government during the critical year of 1777.
The signature at center is that of John Bayard, who served as Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly during the Revolution. David Rittenhouse, named as Treasurer, was one of America's foremost scientists, astronomers, instrument makers, and public officials.
The Lancaster dateline is especially important. In September–October 1777, Pennsylvania's government and the Continental Congress were displaced from Philadelphia because of the British occupation, making Lancaster a temporary center of government during a critical phase of the Revolution.
