1750+ Stocks 1958-1971 John D MacArthur Fellows Founder Palm Beach Gardens FL:
$415.00

John D MacArthur: At the time of his death, he was one of the two or three wealthiest men in the United States. (1978)

He made his core fortune by acquiring the bankrupt Bankers Life and Casualty Company in 1935 for a mere $2,500 and growing it into the largest privately held insurance company in the U.S.

Eccentric Work Style: He was famous for running his billion-dollar empire from a corner table in the coffee shop of the Colonnades Beach Hotel in Florida, which he owned and where he lived in a modest apartment.

Real Estate Empire: He became a massive real estate developer, owning over 100,000 acres in Florida and creating entire communities, most notably Palm Beach Gardens.

Corporate Structure: His empire was a complex web of corporations, which included the following entities included in this lot:

Royal American Industries Corp: This was a high-level holding company with MacArthur as President, used to manage his diverse non-insurance assets (hotels, publishing, real estate subsidiaries).

Royal American Corporation: This was likely an operating subsidiary tasked with the active work of development in Florida, often managed by trusted lieutenants like Jim Felt (President in the late 1950s).

Southern Realty & Utilities Corp: Another operating subsidiary, specialized in providing the essential infrastructure (water, sewer) necessary for his massive Florida land developments.

Legacy (The Foundation): He channeled the vast majority of his fortune into the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, famous for its MacArthur Fellows Program (the "Genius Grants").

Philanthropic Intent: He famously left no instructions for the Foundation's Board, telling them: "I made the money; you guys will have to figure out what to do with it.

This lot with over 1,750 individual stock certificates comes from my father’s collection of antique stocks & bonds. I am not a professional but in general the stocks are in good condition. They have normal age related edge wear; toning and folds/staples as they seemed to come from his office? I believe the majority are cancelled as well. I have no idea. My father went to many estate sales in Florida and John D MacArthur lived in Florida. They are issued to individuals and to large companies/brokerage houses. I believe the majority are cancelled as well.

Collector Appeal:

• Scripophily / stock-certificate collectors

• Florida and Palm Beach Gardens historians

• MacArthur Foundation or business-history enthusiasts

• Vintage office & wall décor buyers

Note: Sold for historical and collectible interest only — no financial or redemption value.
