Historical Context
These engravings were produced during a period when large illustrated Bible histories were costly and labor-intensive. The plates were made using engraved metal/copper plates, allowing for the fine linework and dramatic detail seen in the battle scenes. Many plates were supported by aristocratic or military patrons, which explains the dedication printed below one of the images.
The subject matter is especially strong:Jericho and Ai are two of the most recognizable Old Testament battle narratives, making this a highly displayable antique Bible print with both religious and military-history appeal.
